Safe Check — 24-Hour In-Office Dental Waterline Test
Safe Check is a simple, in-office test kit designed to help dental practices monitor the microbial condition of dental unit waterlines. The test provides an easy-to-read colour result after 24 hours of incubation at room temperature. A blue result indicates a lower bacterial level, while a purple or pink result provides a warning that the waterline may require treatment or shock treatment.
How it works
Any bacteria in the sample release enzymes into the water. These enzymes react with the blue dye, producing a colour change. The colour in the vial indicates the presence or absence of bacteria based on a 500 CFU/mL limit. Safe Check detects live, culturable bacteria that are active and will continue to multiply if they are not stopped — including transparent and small-colony bacteria that are otherwise hard to see and count using in-office HPC tests.
Easy three-step testing
Add water.
Shake.
Wait 24 hours, then check the colour.
Independent clinical evaluation
In an independent clinical evaluation published in Dental Advisor Microbiology Research Report No. 159 (October 2022), Safe Check was tested using samples collected from five dental practices. All 40 waterline samples containing more than 500 CFU/mL produced a purple or pink warning result, while filtered-water controls containing less than 100 CFU/mL remained blue.

Product details
Each package contains individually prepared Safe Check test vials and testing instructions
Safe Check uses a chromogenic dye that responds to bacterial activity over 24 hours at room temperature (20-30°C). No incubator is needed — leave the vial overnight on the operatory counter. A visible color change indicates ≥500 CFU/mL, the CDC dental waterline action threshold.
1
Collect 5-20 mL water sample from each dental unit waterline
2
Add sample directly into Safe Check vial
3
Incubate at room temperature (20-30°C) for 24 hours
